Sinopsis

Member of the Oulipo, the French experimental literary group whose other members include Georges Perec, Italo Calvino, Raymond Queaneau, Daniel Levin Becker, Hervé le Tellier, Marcel Duchamp, and more. Sphinx will be Anne Garréta’s debut work made available in English. Garréta won the 2002 Prix Médicis, given in recognition of authors whose “fame does not yet match their talent” (fellow Oulipien Georges Perec won the award in 1978). Sphinx will be the first work by any female member of the Oulipo to be published in English. Garréta’s essy, “On Bookselves” published in McSweeney’s Issue 22: “The State of Constraint: New Work from Oulipo”. Appeared in episode of Bookworm with Michael Silverblatt in June 2009 with fellow Oulipiens Jacques Roubaud, Ian Monk, Daniel Levin Becker, Marcel Bénabou, and Hervé Le Tellier. Garréta’s Oulipien reading of Proust, “To Sleep, Perchance to Dream” published in December 2013 Oulipo issue of Words Without Borders. Speech by Garréta, “Oulipian Moment for the End of Times”, published in 2006 in Drunken Boat. Essay by Garreta about the creation of the High Line in New York City and a similar park in Paris, “The Secret Jardin”, published in the New York Times, August 21, 2005.
